Winding down from the trip to Ecuador. Very impressed with the family docs there .. and with the many opportunities for collaboration

Leaving cleveland for Washington DC
Making our way home today. Lost my Ipod somewhere in Houston :-( … Quito airport was quiet @ 0345 when we arrived there this AM.
Innovation, Prioritization
Yesterday’s meetings with the physicians brought up a common there that we see in the US as well. One person’s top priority may not the same as another’s. For example - the dysfunctional computer system in the hospital requires the residents to enter the same data in no fewer than three places (paper or computer) during the patient’s hospital stay. But the residents are salaried physicians whose time has already been paid for. There is no incentive for the institution to make their days more efficient.
Is patient safety a priority? Big question. So far - it seems like it’s secondary to physician efficiency and compensation issues. Sad commentary - eh?
We talked about the simple method I sometimes use for prioritization: P = V/W where Priority = Value / Work.
The key question is .. Whose VALUE? (clinic, hospital, doctor, patient) and Whose WORK ($)? (doctor, hospital, nurse, patient).
Are comments broken or are all of you just afraid to say anything?
